$20/USD/month available worldwide.
Gets you a back catalogue of every movie and television show ever made.
HD where possible and in as many languages/subtitles as can be done.
That's the basic package.
There is a 6 month new release window I propose as follows:
For Movies:
All new releases day and date with cinemas start at $6 and each month fall $1 until they are relegated to the back catalogue. Once you purchase a movie it's yours for the the lifetime of your account.
or
$20/USD/month Unlimited gets you every new release in a rolling 6 month period as long as you stay subscribed.
For Television:
Current television - Up To Date TV
$20/USD/month Unlimited
All new episodes of every show on TV. No ads.
or
Subscribe to every episode or buy individual episodes with one cent off each time an episode of a TV series is purchased. Every episode starts at $1USD. This will encourage loyalty and rewards fans. No ads. edit: suggestion from Pegasus_Epsilon on reddit - Also, every episode you ever purchase or are subscribed for the duration of become yours for the life of the account.
or
Watch every episode for free on an ad supported basis. But when this is in effect you can still have the chance to buy individual episodes ad-free.
For Sports:
Sports Unlimited - Live and Archived - $20/USD/month. All these packages are optional parts of the package. So sports fans are paying for themselves and not being subsidised by everyone else. You can see which sports are actually being watched the most at any one time. And that will determine the revenue split between the sports.
Cinemas could come into the fold by selling cinema going packages to consumers by location.
WORLDWIDE
NO REGION RESTRICTIONS IS THE KEY
Top watched charts for movies, TV, sport.
Actual quantifiable and data proven ratings metrics for new TV episodes for the benefit of viewers and advertisers alike.
Make sure that you can optionally see how many people are watching a movie, TV, sport at any one time to give it a tangible social feel.
Even though it's worldwide every country has charts and ratings of their own as well as being able to openly view what is popular in every region and have access to that content to watch.
Subscribe and/or follow directors, actors, stand up comedians and creators of content and they will get measured residuals for their works, which can fund future projects.
Allow independent producers and content creators into the system to rise to the top of the most watched on their own merits through the power of free and they can have the option of charging too.
I don't know who would run it but if the studios don't do it themselves the rights to all these shows and movies would be less to acquire than the potential earnings of the service would make. Once the money is rolling in on the service financing of movies, TV, stand-up, documentaries and more can begin to blossom. Someone with the resources and vision needs to set it up.
Let's look at recent values of the studios:
Time Warner: $38bn
Viacom: $29bn
Dreamworks: $1.6bn
News Corp: $49bn
Disney: $70bn
If a company or group of companies is serious about changing the status quo let's buy the studios to get the back catalogue and outpiut deals for new content into place.
AppleTV hype - small potatoes. Getting excited that one company is in control in a proprietary, DRM manner where they control everything and it all goes to them, with everyone having to buy into their overpriced and ever obsolete-minded product cycle just to buy into their 'take a greedy 30% off the top from every piece of content' mentality. No wonder Apple is filty rich with $100 billion dollars in cash. They should combine forces with other tech and visionary companies to acquire the studios because there is a 'There Will Be Blood' amount of money that could possibly be made.
Back to DREAMFLIXTV:
A FREE back catalogue ad supported service will get more people wanting the service and what better way to compete with piracy than offer a free option that is ad supported while not forgetting that there will be people who will pay for a strictly no ads service. Why would you pay for a service only to get ads?
All shows and movies can be downloaded too if need be when subscribed. Any spreading of media by the old and outdated term 'piracy' is now seen as advertising and marketing for the service. It's free, ad supported and enough people will be happy with all the content on offer with the service in the cloud as well as downloadable at any time to watch as you please that piracy just won't matter anymore.
I don't think the movie studios, TV stations and content creators overall realize how much potential the internet holds for them.
OBLIGATORY to getting people to sign up is the 1 Month FREE trial where they get absolutely everything. Back catalogue movies & TV, all the new 6 month windowed movies and TV and Sports. This will get people hooked.
You could have film festival pack deals where you unlock every movie at a film festival for the price of festival admission. Take the exclusivity out of film festivals and let the world decide and determine the cream that rises to the top. Film fest enthusiasts paying for access to all the movies and there would be numbers on how many people viewed each film. It wouldn't stop movies from making money because after the film is hyped up it will be released to an audience of millions begging for it. And guess what - we let them have it.
Once you purchase to unlock something you get it for life whether you unsubscribe or not. As a matter of fact as there is an ad supported free option there is no need to ever lose any subscribers. People just downgrade to the ad supported back catalogue package with the option to still buy new movies and TV episodes whenever they want. Which will tease people back into the unlimited service. Key is we don't want to lose subscribers Netflix style. Keep viewers happy.
All content can be downloaded if you have an account with no DRM. Sharing will just encourage more people to sign up. Promotion and marketing of sorts, the new word of mouth. Shows and movies can go viral. The key to the service is to get people in with the huge back catalogue of every film, TV show ever made and keep people there with the stream of new content delivered to them easily and exactly the way they want it. Every viewer wins as there is always new content streaming in. Back catalogue subscribers get new movies and TV all the time that keep expiring from the 6 month windows on a rolling basis and new content is always being made for the fresh 6 month windowed packages.
So:
$20/month Unlimited Back Catalogue Movies and TV - no ads, SD to HD, all possible languages/subtitles.
$20/month Unlimited Current Season TV (rolling 6 month window) - no ads, SD to HD, all possible languages/subtitles.
$20/month Unlimited New Movie Cinema at Home Package (rolling 6 month window) - no ads, SD to HD, all possible languages/subtitles.
$20/month Unlimited Sport - Live & from the archives - SD to HD
FREE Ad Supported Back Catalogue Movies and TV
Each package is optional and if you are on the free option you are always allowed to buy TV from the current season TV and cinema at home package as well as sporting matches.
The long tail at it's most true. Sharing and the term 'piracy' of yesteryear will preserve the content into the people's archives of history.
This will accellerate broadband growth and deployment of projects like the National Broadband Network in Australia. Millions will want this service worldwide in their homes and mobile devices. When you stay at a hotel or a friends or family member if there is a smart TV or connected set top box device you can log in to your account anywhere in the world. All your entertainment there to consume and every time you do it in somebody else's home, word of mouth about the service spreads. 'Oh I can get you a FREE trial with literally everything in the first month'.
Broadband is bound to overtake old delivery models and obsolete them by obliterating them in the usefulness/feature stakes.
On Demand Life or live from the moment it comes out. A program drops at a certain time and everyone in the world who wants to watch it can.
Cinemas and TV Networks will have to up their attractability and cable/Pay TV will have to pick up it's game. Or they will bite the dust.
